Mrs. Irwin

This year begins my twenty-first year of teaching in Sherman I.S.D. I have been a 3rd and 2nd grade teacher at Perrin and Neblett Elementary schools, and for the past three years, I have been teaching dyslexic students with the Scottish Rite, Take Flight program at Washington Elementary. My husband, Chris, is a special education teacher at Perrin, now an alternative high-school, and my son, Cooper, was a 2013 SHS graduate. Our roots are deep in the Sherman community. I love living and teaching here.

When my husband and I lived in Austin, Texas in the early 90s, I worked as a houseparent at Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired with deaf/blind, severely disabled children and then I worked as a houseparent at Junior Helping Hands Home for Children, which was a therapeutic residential facility for abused children. These jobs helped me realize how much I loved working with children and inspired me to continue my education to become an elementary school teacher. I want to help each child realize his or her strengths. Teaching is a passion for me and I especially enjoy the challenge of helping students become life-long readers, which is a skill they will need for life. One of the most exciting aspects of my job is watching a child, who used to be a reluctant reader, want to read aloud to me.

Outside of teaching, some of my life’s joys come from spending time with my son in Austin, my parents in Bonham, and my husband and friends here in Sherman. I love to play all kinds of games with those I love; go to see independent films in Dallas; attend live music concerts; laugh at comedy shows; and travel the world. Of course, as a reading teacher, I usually am reading about three books at once.
